Camille Claudel (1864-1943) is a French sculptress who was active during the latter part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. Her early work showed great promise and soon after her arrival in Paris, she began working in the studio of sculptor Auguste Rodin. For several years she had both a professional and personal relationship with him, but then forged an independent career of her own, cut short by personal tragedy. The quality of her work, showing a wide variety of themes, styles and materials, overshadows her unfortunate circumstances.
